“We wanted to speak directly to Black women and the people who love them, about the challenges of motherhood and the many ways to get the support they need,” said Shuronda Robinson, president of Adisa Communications and member of the Black Mamas Community Collective’s leadership team.

In order to do so with a limited budget and within the limited window of time that many women have the idea for an educational video campaign was born (see what we did there). BMCC is a local group of Black mothers and advocates who are telling their stories and offering solutions to healthcare and community institutions to reduce the number of deaths and complications from pregnancy. Black women are 2.3 times more likely to die from childbirth than other groups.

The first video of our campaign will be released in time for Mother’s Day. You can access the video at blackmamasatx.com/video or through our YouTube channel: Black Mamas Community Collective. Please subscribe to our YouTube channel to be notified for new content from Black Mamas ATX.

Local actress Crystal Bird Caviel agreed to serve as the spokesperson for the educational campaign and spent several hours filming with the team. “It’s important that we have all the information and resources possible,” said Bird, as she likes to be called. She has performed at local theaters and was nominated for an B. Iden Payne as best actress in a comedy. Bird is a Black mama herself to an 18-month-old and 8-year-old, who also endured complicated births like other Black mamas.

“A new video will be released weekly starting in May,” adds Robinson.  “We hope Black mamas will learn from the content and share it with others.”

BMCC gives a huge thank you to Stephen Skylark of Skylark Creative, who not only filmed the videos but helped to find free studio space for filming at Austin Movie Gear. Another thank you goes to Kandy Glass of Face Kandy who provided makeup and enhanced the natural beauty of our actress.
